After years of working on caravans, trailers and 12V systems, I’ve learned one thing the hard way. Most towing incidents don’t start as big problems. They start as small moments, a gust of wind, a passing truck, a loose connection, and escalate fast if nothing steps in to help.
That’s why I’m such a strong advocate for proper towing safety systems, particularly reliable break-away systems and electronic sway control.
SWAY HAPPENS FASTER THAN PEOPLE EXPECT
Trailer sway isn’t always dramatic at first. I’ve seen it begin as a subtle movement at highway speed, often caused by crosswinds, uneven loading or sudden steering corrections. By the time a driver feels it properly, the trailer is already controlling the vehicle, not the other way around.
This is where electronic sway control makes a real difference.
Instead of relying on driver reaction, sway control systems monitor trailer movement continuously and intervene automatically, often even without the driver being aware. By independently applying the trailer brakes, the system helps pull the RV back into line before the sway becomes dangerous. I’ve seen setups where a sway event was corrected so smoothly the driver barely noticed, and that’s exactly how it should work.
Real World Example
One customer I worked with regularly towed long distances and had never experienced serious sway. One afternoon, overtaking a large truck in gusty conditions, the trailer began to oscillate. The sway control system detected it instantly and applied corrective braking. He safely maintained his current speed and later told me the situation felt controlled, not scary. A completely different outcome to similar incidents he’d had years earlier without electronic assistance.
That’s the difference between reacting and preventing.
Break-Away Systems Save Lives
Break-away systems are one of the most important, and often overlooked, parts of towing safety. If a trailer becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle, a compliant break-away system automatically applies the trailer brakes, preventing an uncontrolled runaway situation.

When these systems activate as designed, they give drivers precious time and control in a situation where things can otherwise go very wrong very quickly. I am purchasing a Zodiac Pearl caravan and wish to install a sway control breaking system on the caravan. I live in Sydney and will be towing it with a new Ford Everest Tremor which also comes with a sway braking system for towing.
Is it worth getting both that work independently.
