Breakaway Range

Reliable trailer braking safety when it matters most

Independent emergency braking on its own 12V 10Ah battery. ADR 38/05 compliant, checked at the push of a button.

If your trailer separates from the tow vehicle, Breakaway applies its electric brakes and brings it to a controlled stop.

Press the test button before you hitch up and the indicator lights confirm the battery is ready. On the road, the built-in charging system tops it up from the tow vehicle.

Weatherproof, and built for Australian roads and the caravans, campers and box trailers that travel them.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

Which kit do I need?+
Replacing a unit and the cable and wiring are already fitted, take Breakaway Only. Fitting one from scratch, take Breakaway Install. Want the battery looked after while the trailer is parked as well, take Breakaway Install Charge.
Can I install it myself?+
We recommend a qualified installer or auto electrician, so it works correctly and complies with the applicable Australian regulations. Full instructions, wiring diagram and an installer handover checklist are above.
Does it meet Australian regulations?+
Yes. Breakaway is built to ADR 38/05 and designed to help meet the Australian Design Rules for trailers with electric brakes. Install it correctly and use it in line with your state and national regulations.
Does it include a battery?+
Yes. Every kit includes the Breakaway unit with an integrated 12V 10Ah lead-acid battery on board.
How do I test it before towing?+
Two checks. Press the test button and read the indicator lights. Then park on level ground, chock the wheels, disconnect the trailer plug and pull the breakaway pin. The electric brakes should activate straight away. Reinsert the pin, confirm the brakes release, reconnect the plug. If the brakes do not activate or release, do not tow until it is fixed.
Where does the breakaway cable attach?+
To a secure anchor point on the tow vehicle. Not the tow ball, and not the safety chain anchor. It needs enough slack for normal turning and reversing, but must still pull the pin right out if the trailer separates.
Can I use it as a parking brake?+
No. Breakaway is for emergency breakaway braking only. It is not a brake controller and does not replace the one in your tow vehicle. Using it as a parking brake or a security device will flatten the battery and may damage the trailer brakes.
Can the battery be replaced?+
Yes. Use a lead-acid 12V 10Ahr battery, 150 x 65 x 110mm, from your local battery store. Replace it if it fails testing, will not hold charge, or shows damage or swelling.
How do I keep it charged in storage?+
The built-in system charges from the tow vehicle while you tow, so a trailer parked for a long stretch needs an approved charging method. Breakaway Install Charge covers this in the box with the BatteryCharge4 and two adapters.
How does the BatteryCharge4 connect?+
Through the included trailer plug adapter or the Anderson-style adapter, whichever suits your setup. Follow the BatteryCharge4 instructions and the approved BMPRO charging connection method. Charge before first use, after storage, and whenever the test button calls for it.
I already have the cable and wiring. Is this the right pack?+
Yes, provided the existing cable, coil, carabiner and wiring are in good condition and correctly routed. Check them for wear, corrosion and damage first. If any of it needs replacing, Breakaway Install works out simpler than sourcing the parts.
What is in the install kit?+
Install cable, red coil, carabiner, wiring hardware and a retractable curly cord. The unit ships with two Deutsch DT connectors: the 2-pin mates with the switch harness, the 3-pin with the install harness.
What happens after an emergency activation?+
Do not keep towing until the trailer, brakes, wiring and Breakaway system have been inspected. Recharge and retest the battery before the trailer is used again, and replace any damaged switch, cable, connector or mounting hardware.
