“How much power do I actually need in my caravan?”
And the answer is – it depends on how you travel.
You don’t necessarily need the biggest battery bank, the most solar or the largest inverter you can fit. What you need is a system that matches what you want to run, how long you want to stay off-grid and how you plan to recharge.
First, What Are You Actually Running?
Most caravans will need power for things like:
- Fridge
- Lights
- Water pump
- Phone and device charging
- Fans
- TV
Then you might want to add higher-powered appliances such as:
- Coffee machine
- Toaster
- Microwave
- Induction cooktop
- Hair dryer
- Air conditioner
- Other 240V appliances
And this is where your power requirements can increase very quickly.
Running a few lights and a 12V fridge is very different from making coffee, cooking on induction and running an air conditioner off-grid.
How Much Battery Capacity Do You Need?
Think of your batteries as your fuel tank. The more energy you use each day, the bigger that tank may need to be. But there’s another part people often forget:
It’s not just about how much power you can store – it’s about how quickly you can put that power back in.
If you are using more energy every day than you’re replacing, eventually even a large battery bank is going to run flat.
